Ringworm Treatment in Kids: How To Identify, Treat, and Prevent It

Ringworm Treatment

Has your child developed an itchy, circular rash on their skin? It’s possible that they have ringworm, a common fungal infection that can affect children of all ages.

Although ringworm can be uncomfortable and embarrassing, it’s manageable with proper treatment.

In this blog, we’ll delve into everything you need to know about ringworm infection in kids. From identifying the symptoms to exploring effective treatment options and providing practical tips to prevent it from spreading, we’ve got you covered.

What Is Ringworm?

Ringworm

Ringworm is a common fungus that affects the skin, scalp, and nails. Contrary to popular belief, it is caused by a fungus rather than a worm.

It appears as a circular, red rash with raised edges that can be itchy. Ringworm is extremely contagious and can be transmitted through direct contact with an infected person, animal, or contaminated objects such as combs or towels.

Ringworm Symptoms

The appearance and severity of ringworm can vary depending on the location of the infection and the individual child’s immune system. Here are some common symptoms of ringworm to look out for:

  • Circular rash: Ringworm often appears as a raised, red, and scaly patch of skin that may be circular in shape. The rash may have a clear centre and raised edges.
  • Itchiness: Children may become uncomfortable or irritable as a result of the extremely itchy skin in the affected area.
  • Redness and swelling: There may be redness, swelling, and inflammation of the skin around the rash.
  • Blistering: In some cases, the rash may develop small, fluid-filled blisters that can burst and crust over.
  • Hair loss: Ringworm can result in circular patches of hair loss if it affects the scalp.
  • Scaling and crusting: The rash-affected skin may develop a dry, scaly, and crusted appearance as it heals.

Ringworm Prevention

Preventing ringworm infections can be achieved through a combination of personal hygiene practices and environmental precautions. Here are some steps you can take to help prevent ringworm infections:

  • Good hygiene habits: Encourage your child to wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water regularly, especially after playing with pets or in communal areas. Teach them to avoid touching or scratching their skin unnecessarily.
  • Clean and dry skin: Keep your child’s skin clean and dry, as fungus thrives in warm, moist environments. Make sure they take regular showers and dry themselves completely, paying particular attention to any sweat-prone areas.
  • Avoid sharing personal items: Tell your child to refrain from sharing personal items with others, such as towels, combs, hats, or clothing, as these items can harbour the fungus and promote its spread.
  • Clean and disinfect: To get rid of any potential fungal spores, regularly clean and disinfect shared surfaces like sporting goods, mats, and shower floors.
  • Protect feet in public areas: To reduce fungus exposure, encourage your child to wear sandals or flip-flops when walking in public areas such as locker rooms, swimming pools, and communal showers.
  • Proper pet care: If you have pets, ensure they receive regular veterinary check-ups and appropriate treatment for any fungal infections. Limit your child’s contact with infected animals.

Ringworm Treatment

Here are some common treatment options for ringworm prevention.

1. Topical Antifungal Creams or Ointments

These are applied directly to the affected area of skin and are usually the first line of treatment for mild to moderate ringworm infections.

Common examples include clotrimazole, terbinafine, and miconazole.

2. Oral Antifungal Medications

If the infection is severe or widespread, a doctor may prescribe an oral medication, such as terbinafine, griseofulvin, or itraconazole.

These medications may need to be taken for several weeks or months to fully clear the infection.

3. Antifungal Shampoos

If you have ringworm on your scalp, you should use a medicated shampoo with antifungal ingredients like ketoconazole or selenium sulphide.
