How does blood relative donor transplant work?

Family members, spouse (living, related donors) and friends (living, unrelated donors) can donate one kidney safely if medical tests show that the donor will have nearly normal kidney function after giving up one kidney.

Surgery

Once a donor is matched, a kidney transplant is most often placed in the lower belly without removing the failed kidneys of the patient. A kidney transplant is most often placed in the lower belly without removing the failed kidneys. The artery and vein of the new kidney are joined to an artery and a vein in the pelvis next to the bladder. The ureter (the tube that drains urine from the kidney to the bladder) attached to the new kidney is joined to the bladder or to one of the ureters.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Which treatments are available to treat kidney failure?

Kidney failure can be treated primarily in two ways- dialysis and kidney transplant. Dialysis treatment consists of connecting a machine to the patient to filter and purify blood, the work that healthy kidneys do. Kidney transplant consists of replacing the unhealthy kidney with a healthy kidney from the donor.

2. What are the advantages of a kidney transplant over dialysis?

A kidney transplant involves a surgery replacing the unhealthy kidney with a healthy one. The kidney transplant is a one-time major surgery. However, dialysis needs to be done on a daily basis and takes at least a couple of hours. So, getting a kidney transplant provides a much better quality of life. It has also been observed that a kidney transplant results in a healthier and longer life.

3. Is kidney transplant a risky procedure?

Being a major procedure, there are some risks such as (a) Rejection of transplant (b) Blood clots (c) Infection (d) Heart stroke

4. How long does it take for the kidneys to start working after the surgery?

In the case of living donor transplant, the kidneys start working almost immediately. In deceased donor kidney transplant, the kidneys take some time to start functioning, sometimes this takes several weeks. So, until then, the patient needs to be on dialysis.
