What is Hydrocephalus?

Our brain has fluid in pockets called ventricles. This fluid helps to carry nutrients to the brain and remove wastes as well. Sometimes, there is an accumulation of fluid in the ventricles which puts pressure on the brain tissues. This is a dangerous condition called hydrocephalus.

What is Ventriculoperitoneal shunt?

To remove the excess fluid, a device called Ventriculoperitoneal shunt is used. This device diverts the fluid from the brain and restores normal flow.

What are the causes of Hydrocephalus?

Many children are born with hydrocephalus. Some of the reasons for the build-up of the fluid are:

  • Excess production of the fluid

  • Blockages in the brain preventing proper flow of the fluid or

  • Improper absorption of the fluid by the blood vessels

What are the symptoms that indicate hydrocephalus?

There are many symptoms that point to hydrocephalus. The most obvious ones are:

  • Seizures

  • Memory loss

  • Head which is large in size

  • Headaches

  • Problems in coordination

How is hydrocephalus diagnosed?

Imaging tests such as ultrasound, CT scans and MRIs are used to diagnose hydrocephalus.

What is the treatment for hydrocephalus?

Currently, the most widely used procedure to treat hydrocephalus is using a ventriculoperitoneal shunt.

How is surgery done for hydrocephalus?

In this procedure, two catheters are placed to drain excess fluid from the ventricles. The entire procedure takes a short time to complete.

Flow of the procedure:

  • Patient is given general anaesthesia for the procedure

  • A small incision is made near the ear and a hole is drilled in the skull

  • Two catheters are placed at each of these openings

  • The catheter placed at the ear drains the fluid into the abdominal cavity which is absorbed

  • The incisions and the hole in the skull are closed

Is there any other treatment for hydrocephalus apart from surgery?

Unfortunately, no. The only treatment that has been working so far is VP shunt surgery.

Why is hydrocephalus a dangerous condition?

The excess fluid in the brain can put pressure on the brain tissue. This pressure can turn out to be fatal. Moreover, in children the excess fluid hinders the development of the brain as well as formation of facial features.

Is it possible to avoid infants from getting hydrocephalus?

Premature birth may lead to hydrocephalus. So, pregnant women taking proper care to ensure premature labour does not happen and taking the right prenatal vitamins at the right time may be helpful in avoiding hydrocephalus in infants.

Is the surgery painful?

Not really. You might feel tenderness in your neck and belly. The doctor will give you pain medication to take care of any pain.

How long does it take to recover from the surgery?

You will be home within a week of the surgery. You will still have some discomfort and complete recovery will take about 6 weeks’ time.

Will I have to shave my head for the surgery?

No, the doctor will only shave a small portion of your head where he will make an incision.

Will I be able to move around after the surgery?

Yes, you will be able to move around. In fact, it is advisable that you move around as this reduces the possibility of having blood clots. Moving around also stimulates bowel movement. If you are unable to move, nurses will help you to get up and move around.

What about my diet after surgery?

There are no restrictions on diet as such. However, you will start having liquid food first and then, slowly move on to having solid food. Eating a nutritious, well-balanced diet is important for a quicker recovery.

How can I take care of my incisions from the surgery?

You will have 3 incisions- one on the head, one near the neck and one in the abdomen. You need to take care not to wet the incisions before they are completely healed. So, its best to avoid showering, swimming until the doctor tells you. You should also not use any hair products like creams, ointments, oil etc before the doctor tells you that it’s okay.

What signs should I look out for after surgery?

You should make sure your incisions are not infected. Some of the signs of an infection are: Swelling or redness, Pus or any other foul-smelling fluid draining from the incision

What care should I take after the surgery?

Exercising the brain both by doing physical therapy and cognitive therapy is important for a faster recovery. Eating a nutritious and well-balanced diet is also extremely important.
