What are Gallstones?

Gallstones are stone-like hardened deposits that form in the gallbladder. These are formed when bile contains too much cholesterol or bilirubin. The formation of gallstones in the gallbladder is termed cholelithiasis.

Symptoms of Gallstones
  • Pain in the upper right abdomen

  • Pain in the right side of the shoulder

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Dark urine, clay-coloured stools

  • Jaundice

Diagnosis

The doctor will perform a physical examination to check for any visible changes in the skin for a yellowish tint indicating jaundice. A blood test may be done to check the amount of bilirubin and to rule out other infections. Ultrasound and abdominal CT scan might be done to get the images of the abdomen.

Surgery

The two types of surgery options include:

  • Open surgery (traditional method)

  • Laparoscopic surgery
